One of Football's Great

Here is one of football's future upstarts! I'm talking about Jordan - a dime package, fun and gun; blitz boy. Michael and I went to cheer our Layton favorite last Saturday. End score Clearfield 18 - Layton 12. Michael and I both agree - it was the coaching (Please not another sweep?) not the players who demonstrated the grit and determination that should have won this game. The defense was awesome even though Jordan told us that this wasn't a very good game for him - he only got four tackles and he's not satisfied unless he gets five or more. Say, "I'm going to knock your block off," for the camera Jordan.

Sister's Got 'Tude

This is Sister Kinsey Bowman, missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I was privileged to take Kinsey to the MTC last Wednesday. Celeste, her mom - my sister-in-law, Kinsey and I had a great time shopping before we dropped her off curbside like a cute little take-out order of something great! The people in California will love her - she is a Bowman after all.

Dad's Cabin

We spent this weekend on a major project at the cabin - we put 43 roof trusses in place. There were so many accidents waiting to happen yet with only a minor fall off the ladder (Michael will let us know tomorrow if he can still walk, stand and sit), no one was seriously hurt. I actually cannot believe that we accomplished this feat. Thanks go to Michael, Ethan, Kyle, Brady, Jack and of course, Dad.

Howard's Boat

We have the most amazing neighbors - Howard and Rebecca. They are so talented and generous and just plain fun. Howard is a engaging storyteller, artisan and fine craftsman. Rebecca is a gourmet cook, master gardener, fabulous entertainer and tennis player. Recently Howard finished a kayak that he has been working on since January. Untold hours have gone into this masterpiece - these pictures do not do this work of art justice. It is simply one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Happy Birthday Grandpa Wilcock

He is quite the guy! At 71 years young, my dad Fred, keeps busy by rebuilding and selling tractors, bow hunting, fishing and oh... did I mention building a cabin. That's right, last year my dad started building a mega-cabin for the entire family to enjoy. This is not a run-of-the-mill hire a contractor to build a cabin kind of guy. This is a hardworking man jumping in and out of the back of a pickup like he's 25 building a cabin pretty much by himself kind a guy. It's some kind of standard to live up to.

Traditionally on his birthday, Fred treats everyone to a birthday dinner at Golden Corral (the Chinese buffet was nixed by Eric). Then we all head over to the house for cake. This year he let the grandchildren help him drive a tractor around the yard. Bonus! Debbie got to ride in the bucket. Like I said - quite the guy. Happy birthday dad! I love you.

Road Trip Day 10-13

Thursday morning is waffle morning! After a hearty breakfast we dropped Andrea and Jayson off at the Mall and Michael and I went to play tennis. It was a cool, cloudy and breezy morning but the tennis was hot! We had a great time and as always Michael prevailed – 7-5 and 3-2 (we got kicked off the court by the high school security officer before we could finish the second set).  After a scrumptious chicken enchilada lunch (seriously, all we do is eat and I love it) everyone pretty much drifted off to sleep and that’s where we are in this blog. Be back soon with more amazing adventures and stories.

Okay so it's a new day. We set off bright and early Friday so that we could stop in Toppenish to visit family friends, stop by the Columbia River Temple and then push through to Ontario, Oregon in time to attend Jordan and Tori’s wedding reception. Toppenish was great. Of course we couldn’t leave Maurine and Bobcat’s home without a big dish of homegrown watermelon or the Pettingill’s without apples. We took a detour at Dairymaid for fresh cheese curds and ice cream. That meand that we only had time for a quick stop and picture at the Columbia River Temple, then we pushed on to Ontario arriving at the Church at 7:30 PM. Just in time to greet family and watch the bride and groom cut the wedding cake. So cute!

Our hotel room next to the truck stop was… well… it was sort of clean. But we were too tired to care. Friday we said - see ya wouldn’t want to be ya to Ontario and headed to the Boise Temple. We enjoyed our time so much. Our final road trip stop was another Diner’s, Drive-ins & Dives pick – the West Side Drive In. Get this – they serve prime rib, steak fingers and killer sweet potato fries. Loved it!

The Twin Falls Temple was next on the list and again, it was another wonderful experience. Well, a couple more hours and we’ll be home. We figure that in its entirety we will have traveled nearly 3000 miles - crazy. But what’s not to love about sharing part of our road trip with Andrea and Jayson? Between trivia questions like, “What President was also a Chief Justice?” to the Alphabet Game and I’m Thinking Of… the time went by so fast. We had a great time guys and we just want to say: thanksabunchamus and infinity-mucho-merci-beaucoup-a-loop-a-nus!!!

Road Trip Day 4-9

Today was our last day in Yellowstone Park – so we headed to Old Faithful. We got to the parking lot about an hour before the projected eruption and decided to walk around the lower boardwalk trail that was about 1.2 miles in length. You should know that we made a tactical error in our food planning. That is -  we packed boiled eggs in our cooler and ate one most mornings. Imagine the smell of all those steam mud and sulphurized waterspouts and boiled eggs for breakfast. It will be a long time before I want to see this particular part of the country or eat boiled eggs.

After we watched the beauty of Old Faithful as it agitated and sprayed a plume of 110’ we walked through the spectacular Old Faithful Lodge, headed to the General Store and shared a candy bar in a rocking chair on the porch. As we were leaving the area on our way to West Yellowstone Michael asked me where the Morning Glory thermal pool was on the park map. This is THE site that he really wanted to see because the last time he there at the age of 11 it made such an impression on him. I regretfully informed him that the pool was back on a trail by Old Faithful. We promptly turned around and headed back to the Old Faithful parking lot. An hour and a half later we came to the pool of water. It wasn’t as big or as blue or as he remembered it – poor Michael. So we’re on the road again – our longest stretch of the trip – 500 miles to Spokane.

It was quite a drive, made pleasant by air conditioning, a game of tennis at a little high school in Superior, Montana, more air conditioning and a book on tape (in that order). We got into Spokane and crashed at our hotel… oh the  joy of a queen-size bed! The next morning after breakfast we went to the Spokane Temple, changed by the side of a country road (we’re getting very good at this) and then went to the airport to pick up Mom (Jeanette). Then we worked our way up to the northern panhandle of Idaho and on to Priest Lake. What a revelation! We stayed with Jeanette’s best friend from high school, Jane. Oh Jane, what a wonderful lake house, fantastic home cooking and superb surroundings! Michael and I are sold. We have switched our dream of a beach cottage on the Oregon coast to a lake house… somewhere.

The first night we sleep in another wonderful, roomy bed and like clockwork I had to get up for my nightly potty moment. Now I’m not bluffing when I tell you that our room, in fact the entire house, was pitch black. I thumped and bumped my way to the bedroom door and down the hall. Tried a few doors and straightened a picture that I grazed along the wall before I found the bathroom. As I headed back to “our” room I found the door handle walked in and immediately bumped into the edge of a bed; started feeling my way around the room and noticed an LED alarm clock and said to myself, “Wait a minute we don’t have an alarm clock. Holy cats, I’m in someone else’s room.” So I thumped and bumped my way out of the room and quietly shut the door. I remember standing in the hall way and making our in the faint moonlight the shape of two couches. By this time I was so disoriented that I thought that maybe I should just go sleep on the couch until morning. Instead I decided to try one more door – eureka! I found our room and bed. Michael says that it was at this point that I got chatty with him and tried to tell him the whole story. I, on the other hand, didn’t begin to chat until I noticed that he was getting up to go to the potty himself at which point I said, “Good luck with that!”

After two glorious days of art gallery shopping, laughing, paddling on the lake and golfing we reluctantly left Priest Lake. We started back to Spokane and on to Mom’s house in Puyallup, Washington. Michael said at dinner that night, “Let the five pound weight gain begin!” Jeanette always stuffs us to the gills with baked goods, full course breakfasts and filling dinners. Resistance is futile.

Picked up Andrea and Jayson at the airport on Tuesday heading to downtown Seattle and a day at the Waterfront and Pike’s Place market. At the Market we watched the fishmonger’s throw fish around and splatter fish juice on an older, very demanding woman. “I want to see a show! Where’s the show?!” You get the idea. We purchased and ate the best (and I do mean the best) nectarine that any of us had every eaten - so sweet and incredibly juicy. Next we boarded the ferry and went to Bainbridge Island to eat at a place showcased on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Even though the girl that answered the phone at the Big Star Diner told me directions and that it was within walking distance (debatable) she didn’t tell me that the restaurant closed at 3:00 PM.  Time we arrived? 5:00 PM. So we walked back to the ferry hungry, tired and cranky. Okay, I was the only one that was cranky.  On the ferry Michael fed the seagulls cookie bits as they floated by the railing of the boat – “Wait for it. Wait for it. Wait for it.” After landing we made a beeline for Safeco Field, a Starvin Marvin hotdog and a great game! Mariners -3 Angles – 0. What a wonderful day.

Wednesday was a short day-trip to Leavenworth – the wonderful Bavarian town where Michael lived as a young boy. After a quick drive-by tour of the town the boys golfed; the girls shopped and in the end we left town with a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory caramel apple, soft peanut brittle and of course, more nectarines!

Road Trip Day 1-3

Yay! We're off and running on a pleasant drive up to Soda Springs, Idaho then over the border to Alpine, Wyoming and a night’s stay at the Nordic Inn. After a rough evening (for Michael)– apparently my bedcover thievery got way out of hand, we joined four other adults, two children and a Mad River outfitter to run (that’s river rafting for you city kids) 8 ½ miles of the Snake River. Michael was a lead paddler – right up front on the right-hand side. I’m thinking our guide, Jim, took a special liking to Mike because he got all the fun and the water! We ran Class I, II and III rapids - it was so amazing…and a little chilly. Michael also was the first to play Wheel of Fortune on the raft. He stood up and tried to balance on the bow of the boat while every one paddled as fast as they could to make the raft spin. He made me proud!

After we dried off and ate a picnic lunch, it was time to head up to Jackson Hole and the Grand Teton National Park. We had a leisurely stroll by Jenny Lake then drove past the magnificent Jackson Lake and on to our cabin at Lake Village at Yellowstone Park. When we pulled into the parking area of our destination, there were about 25 buffalo grazing and grumbling through the cabins and cars. I guess I never realized that buffalo are great grumblers. They just graze and grumble all over the place.

I knew we were in trouble when Michael took our luggage into the cabin and came out and said with a laugh, “It’s really primitive.” And truthfully, it was. However, I didn’t mind the really, really old room and furnishings or the fact that there isn’t a phone, television or air conditioning to be found. Or even that the bathroom sink is next to the bed. I did struggle with the bed itself. I mean seriously, it’s not much bigger than a twin and it certainly isn’t a full size – we’ll just call it a fwin.

After surveying our little piece of cabin heaven we walked up to Lake Lodge and sat on two log rocking chairs on the grand porch overlooking Yellowstone Lake and played UNO until about 9:30 at night. Then it was back to the cabin to watch a movie on my laptop. It’s probably important here to insert that I have paranoia with bears and when Michael insisted that it was okay to leave our food in our cabin with us instead of putting it back in the car I was rather…hesitant. At this point I tried to go to my happy place and to sleep but it was tough, I was cold and cramped on the fwin and I knew a bear was going to break in at any moment. I finally slept – fitfully – and awoke to a brand new bearless day. It seems as if all the smart bears were in another campground last night because a smart bear could have just turned the key that Michael left in the front door last night and walked right in!

Today we headed up through the Park. We walked along Fishing Bridge, hiked around Upper and Lower Falls, and saw more bad-smelling, rainbow colored mud pots and springs than the senses can hold in one day. We also drove to the Tower Falls, Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Geyser Basin before heading back to fwin sweet fwin. Along the way we started to write down all the states represented by car’s license plates. Right now we have 41 states. Crazy!

So there you have it - a travelogue of the first 2 ½ days of our road trip. There’s been goofing off, grumbling, paranoia and smells. Sounds like a perfect vacation to me!

My Baby's 32!

Tell me it isn't true. How can he be 32 already? Happy Birthday Brandon!
